Ik ben Helena Taghon, filmstudente aan LUCA School of Arts in Brussel. Dit jaar krijg ik de kans om mijn Bachelorfilm te maken, maar zo een kortfilm kost natuurlijk wel wat. Als studente kan ik dit niet alleen en daarom probeer ik geld in te zamelen via sponsors, beurzen,... en ook nu deze crowdfunding. Om dit project te realiseren heb ik dus jullie hulp nodig! Waarover gaat de film?

In Moederlief zorgt een nacht in het geboortedorp van studente Lola voor inzichten over de vurige, maar ook fragiele connectie tussen haar en haar mama Sanne.

Op een vrijdagavond in een klein dorpje in de Vlaamse Ardennen zitten studente Lola en haar mama Sanne in de auto op weg naar huis. Ze hebben duidelijk een hevige ruzie en zijn beiden woedend. Dit zorgt er dan ook voor dat Lola, wanneer ze thuis aankomen, haar fiets pakt en in haar opvliegendheid de nacht in fietst. 

Ze beslist om naar oude vrienden in het plaatselijk jeugdhuis te gaan en laat haar lichaam alle emoties uit haar lijf dansen. Het terugzien van een vriend uit haar jeugd, het dansen, het zweten en een vlam van een aansteker zorgen de hele nacht door voor flashbacks van haar jeugd. Nog meer, ze brengen haar terug bij de oorsprong van haar woede-uitbarstingen én bij het patroon van het wegvluchten naar de rust. Dit brengt haar tot bij haar mama Sanne, bij hun gelijkenissen en bij een specifieke plek in de natuur waar Sanne heen ging als ze, toen Lola nog jong was, zo een woedebui had. Daar kwam Sanne vroeger terug tot rust en ging Lola haar, na zulke momenten, opzoeken. Doorheen de hele nacht blijft Lola in haar hoofd bezig met haar mama en deze connectie en gelijkenis die hun zo sterk verbindt. 

Bij het eerste zonlicht fietst Lola langs de uitgestrekte velden en het ontwakende dorp terug naar huis. De natuur en de zachtheid ervan brengen meer en meer een kalmte tot bij haar. Wanneer ze een bos passeert, herkent ze het. Het is de plek uit haar herinneringen. Lola zet dan ook haar fiets aan de kant en wandelt tot bij een caravan in het bos. Hier brengen de natuur en het vertrouwde gevoel van de plek Lola tot rust.

Na een tijdje daar alleen te zijn, komt Sanne aangewandeld met twee tassen, gevuld met warme thée. Ze zet zich naast Lola en laat de rust ook toe. Samen komen ze terug tot rust en terug bij elkaar.

Waar gaat het geld precies naartoe?

Een kortfilm maken kost geld, veel geld. Om deze kosten draaglijker te maken probeer ik dus op verschillende manieren geld op te halen. Een daarvan is deze crowdfunding. Het geld dat ik hiermee ophaal gaat naar de pre-productie en post-productie van de kortfilm. Hieronder valt: huur van technisch materiaal en locaties, transportkosten, catering, decor en props; en ook montage, colorgrading, foley, muziek en geluidsmixage.

Is er nadien nog geld over, dan gaat dit naar de distributie, met andere woorden: de film leven geven.

What is the film about?

In “Moederlief” (Motherlove), a night in the birth village of student Lola provides insights into the fiery, but also fragile connection between her and her mother Sanne.

On a Friday evening in a small village in the Flemish Ardennes, student Lola and her mother Sanne are in the car on their way home. They are clearly having a fierce argument and are both furious. This also causes Lola, when they arrive home, to grab her bike and cycle into the night in her rage. She decides to visit old friends at the local bar and dances all the emotions out of her body. Seeing a friend from her youth, the dancing, the sweating and a flame from a lighter cause flashbacks of her youth, all night long. Even more, they bring her back to the origin of her angry outbursts and to the pattern of escaping to peace. This brings her to her mother Sanne, to their similarities and to a specific place in nature where Sanne went when she, when Lola was still young, had such a fit of rage. That is where Sanne used to calm down and Lola would find her after such moments. Throughout the night, Lola keeps thinking about her mother and this similarity that connects them so strongly.

At the first light of day, Lola cycles back home past the vast fields and the awakening village. Nature and its softness bring her more and more peace. When she passes a forest, she recognises it. It is the place from her memories. Lola then puts her bike aside and walks to a trailer in the forest. Here, nature and the familiar feeling of the place bring Lola peace.

After being there alone for a while, Sanne walks up with two cups filled with hot tea. She sits down next to Lola and allows the peace to come. Together they come back to peace and back to each other.

Where exactly does the money go?

Making a short film costs money, a lot of money. To make these costs more bearable, I try to raise money in different ways. One of them is crowdfunding. The money I raise with this goes to the pre-production and post-production of the short film. This includes: renting technical equipment and locations, transport costs, catering, decor and props; and also editing, color grading, foley, music and sound mixing.

If there is any money left afterwards, it goes to distribution, in other words: giving the film life.
