Beschrijving

Sofia Caesar will defend her doctoral research in the arts, titled "Moving Conditions".

Moving Conditions is based on Sofia Caesar’s experience of a chronic condition, and in dance practices and somatic therapies. It is by recognizing the body’s limits that these constraints can be transformed into potency. Her research asks what can be done with the movements and moods that condition us. It has resulted in a book manuscript: “Dancing with Constraints, A Dance Manual in Dialogue Form”; and four exhibitions: “Canseira (Lassitude), 2019,” “Superaquecidas (Overheated),” 2020, “Caûma,” 2023, and, finally, “Stuck, Exhausted, Overheated, Misdiagnosed and Horny, 2024”, to be shown at Terrarium in LUCA School of Arts between 7 and 11 October 2024.

The members of the examination committee are:

  • Prof. dr. Hans Maes (LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven, chairman of the examination committee)
  • Prof. dr. Liesbeth Decan (supervisor, LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven)
  • Dr. Hana Miletic (co-supervisor, LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven)
  • Prof. dr. Esther Venrooij (LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven)
  • Dr. Nicola Setari (LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven)
  • Daniel Blanga Gubbay (curator and researcher, Brussels)
  • Sofia Dati (curator, Brussels)

You can attend the defense by reserving a free ticket. Afterwards, you are invited to a reception.
